Let’s prototype an AI product! In this hands-on session, you’ll imagine and design a concept product powered by machine learning. Explore the new digital interactions emerging from machine learning, and how you can put those interactions to work today.
Your guide is designer Josh Clark, author of Designing for Touch and ambassador of the near future. As we build our prototype together, you’ll learn practical process, technique, and design patterns for designing for machine-generated content and interaction. But you’ll also absorb lasting lessons and perspective for how to design for emerging platforms generally. You will learn new UX techniques for expanding service and brand across fresh-from-the-future technologies like speech, bots, physical interfaces, and artificial intelligence. You’ll leave the day inspired to create—and ready for action.
Along the way, you will learn to:
- Understand the machine-learning technologies that are easily available and ready for you to use as design material right now. See how to fit them into your everyday products and processes.
- Use some of the new prototyping tools for smart/AI interfaces.
- Use play and experimentation as the means to create real products for new technologies.
- Refit familiar design techniques for new contexts, and discover emerging best practices for smart/AI interfaces.
- Create honest interfaces that set expectations and guide behavior in ways that match the system’s ability.
- Give your interface a subtle “body language” to suggest to users how new services work.
- Establish new design principles for presenting machine-generated content, conclusions, and interactions.
About Josh Clark
Josh Clark is a UX design leader who helps organizations build products for what's next. He is founder of Big Medium, a New York design studio specializing in future-friendly interfaces for artificial intelligence, connected devices, and responsive websites. His clients include Samsung, Time Inc, ExxonMobil, About.com, TechCrunch, Entertainment Weekly, eBay, O’Reilly Media, and many others. Josh has written several books, including Designing for Touch and Tapworthy: Designing Great iPhone Apps. He speaks around the world about what’s next for digital interfaces.
Before the internet swallowed him up, Josh was a producer of national PBS programs at Boston’s WGBH. He shared his three words of Russian with Mikhail Gorbachev, strolled the ranch with Nancy Reagan, hobnobbed with Rockefellers, and wrote trivia questions for a primetime game show. In 1996, he created the popular “Couch-to-5K” (C25K) running schedule, which has helped millions of skeptical would-be exercisers take up jogging. (His motto is the same for fitness as it is for software user experience: no pain, no pain.)
